(WKBN) – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the regional winners of its Paint the Plow contest.

Paint the Plow is a statewide initiative that highlights safe winter driving while showcasing the artistic talents of students across Pennsylvania.

This year’s theme was “Don’t race. Allow some space,” and a few local school districts participated by painting snowplow blades with original artwork reflecting that theme.

This year, Mercer Area Middle-High School won the “Fan Favorite” award, determined by online voting.

An honorable mention was given to Commodore Perry High School, which finished in a close second place.

The “Judges’ Pick” award was presented to East Forest High School of Forest County, selected by a panel of PennDOT representatives.

The student-painted plow blades will be put into service on state-owned roadways throughout the winter.

Statewide, a total of 78 schools participated in this year’s Paint the Plow, with more than 22,000 votes cast in the online “Fan Favorite” competition. Photos of all the plows can be viewed on PennDOT’s Paint the Plow website.
