Two people behind a "vicious attack" in which they went to a man's home and then smashed an ornament over his head have been sentenced.

Merseyside Police said Michael Hobson, 50, and Jodie Murray, 42, knocked on the victim's door in Bootle, Merseyside, then once inside assaulted him on 24 May.

The man in his 50s suffered a fractured eye socket and cheekbone and said he had suffered memory loss as a result of the attack.

Hobson, of Hornby Road in Walton, who admitted causing grievous bodily harm, received a 15-month jail term and was issued with a three-year restraining order from the judge at Liverpool Crown Court.

Last month his co-defendant Murray, of Fazakerley Street in Liverpool city centre, was issued with a 12-month community order.

In an impact statement read to the court the victim wrote: "I received both physical and psychological injuries.

"My socket was fractured, and I was advised by my doctor to have an operation to realign the eye but I'm not going to because I'm afraid of having the operation and did not want a lasting scar."

'Memory loss'

The court heard the man had suffered memory loss, and could not remember what happened in June or July.

"Despite my physical injuries the assault has had more of a psychological impact on me. It has affected my sleep, and I cannot settle in my own home," he said.

"If I hear the slightest noise, I become worried and look to see if anyone is there. I have also put security measures in place."

Det Con Immy Mahmood of Merseyside Police said: "This was a vicious attack which has left a considerable impact on the victim, and he is continuing to recover from the incident.

"I would like to praise the courage and dignity shown by the victim throughout the investigation, which has been a very distressing experience for him."
