Though temperatures are currently warm in Western North Carolina, the National Weather Service has issued some weather warnings for the area on Friday, Dec. 19.
Thunderstorm warnings in central North Carolina led into a warm, windy morning throughout the region. Western North Carolina didn't see any such warning, but an early morning alert from the weather service advised residents of the area to be cautious due to heavy winds until the evening of Dec. 19.
As for the upcoming week, National Weather Service forecasts appear to be debunking claims of Christmas Day snow in the region and throughout the state. Here's what to know today, this weekend and heading into Christmas week.
Wind advisory in Asheville, Buncombe County
A wind advisory was issued by the federal agency at 1:16 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 19. The advisory applies to Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Haywood, Buncombe, Graham, Northern Jackson, Macon and Southern Jackson counties, including the cities of Kyle, Cashiers, Rainbow Springs, Faust and Highlands.

The advisory is in effect from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. on Dec. 19, in communities above above 3,500 feet. Northwest winds of 20-30 mph with gusts of 45-55 mph are expected in high elevations of Western N.C. At this strength, winds can blow around unsecured objects, and could blow down tree limbs potentially resulting in a few power outages.
The alert advised people in the affected areas to secure outdoor objects that could be blown around and use extra caution while driving, especially high profile vehicles.
North Carolina weather warnings: Thunderstorms expected in central area
As reported by ABC, severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for several counties in the central part of the state overnight on Dec. 18 and into Friday morning, Dec. 19, ahead of an incoming cold front. Affected counties included Alamance, Chatham, Montgomery, Moore, Orange, Durham and Randolph counties. Alerts have since expired, leading into a warm, breezy day.
Christmas weather Ashevile, NC, 2025: Will it snow on Christmas?
Despite conflicting long-range predictions from the Old Farmer's Almanac, the National Weather Service is not predicting any snow on Christmas Day in the Asheville area. In fact, forecasts are balmy on the big day, with a high near 67 degrees expected on top of sunny weather.
